On a hike a few weeks back with some friends in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, Arizona, we came upon this odd mushroom (genus Ganoderma), complete with grass growing right through its cap. This mushroom is perhaps a Ganoderma sessile -- a type of polypore fungus. Though quite common in the eastern U.S., I hadn't previously noticed these mushrooms in Arizona. By late August of 2018, the southwestern U.S. monsoon had been active for nearly 2 months, and the trails near Bear Wallow were verdant with flowers and as well as with several species of large fungus, like this one. Photos taken on August 26, 2018.
