• Huge Rhododendron in Western Pennsylvania

    The rhododendron pictured above is covering the end of this house near Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. It's as tall at the roof (probably 18 - 20 ft or 6 m) and its spread is over 40 ft (12 m). For the last 25 years or so, during my visits to western Pennsylvania, I've noticed it begin to overtake the dwelling. Rhododendron, sometimes confused with mountain laurel, typically are at peak bloom here over the Memorial Day weekend. They're the biggest genus in the family Ericaceae and can be either evergreen or deciduous -- the ones shown here are evergreen. Photo taken on May 26, 2018.
